A Cow On Every Corner!

A serious confrontation with reality started with my diet. It had to change!  It would take a “cow on every corner” to help me balance my eating style.  As a devoted “junk-food junkie,” the task seemed a bit too hard and unrealistic.  So, since I was a writer, my creative juices started churning—I came up with a solution!

How About I Mix My Favorite Fast-Food Spots to Make Healthier Choices? Working near the airport, I know there’s “a cow on every corner.”  There is a certain chicken house that has it all—and I mean all.  However, much farther down the road is another favorite, where the salads pop with those special accents I love.  So one day, I said, “Why not have both?”  Just what the doctors ordered—balance and healthful eating; it only took a drive-thru moment to make it happen!  Both places were right here in Hapeville, Georgia, on the way home, and a full-course meal with the right ingredients, all able to eat before seven. Supplementing the change with my new biohacking lifestyle, added POW!

Since cooking is not on my agenda, not a foodie, and I eat much smaller portions, the plan slowly came into manifestation.  Especially since I don’t want to feel tired or weighed down after I eat.  Having bouts of nausea does not help either.  So I came up with my own way of enjoying both worlds.  I mix my favorite fast-food styles to create healthy fast food choices that actually work for me.

My Two-Spot Strategy

Instead of sticking to just one place and ordering a heavy combo, I started thinking differently. From one place, fresh grilled chicken with super healthy greenery, with a light, delightful crunch

I realized I could combine the best parts of two different fast-food spots:

From  the other, a robust salad with all the fixings in a variety I love

That way, I still get the taste I want—but in a smarter way.  Here’s what that looks like for me:

  • A grilled chicken option from one spot
  • A side salad or fruit option from another
  • Sweet tea serves as a dessert instead of an extra
    • (Super Secret:  I drink water at home or carry my own bottle in the car)

It feels like I’m building my own perfect meal while keeping the FUN; by upgrading the choices, I am giving up “junk food” for fun food. Winter months are even cozier, because both spots serve soups-yum!

However, I DO follow one simple rule:  Keep the balance fun, upgrade the ingredients. This means:

  • Grilled instead of fried
  • Fresh toppings instead of heavy extras
  • Smaller portions instead of oversized combos

Another SUPER SECRET: No condiments

I still enjoy every bite—but I feel better after eating, and there is no guesswork whether too much sugar or fat was added. Real Talk: I Still Love the Classics. Let’s be real for a second.

Sometimes I will get fries; getting the desire out of the way, but I always go small.
Sometimes it may be a burger – but only small ones; committed to letting the big ones go totally! And that’s okay!  But now, instead of going all in, I balance things out.  For example:

  • If I do the fries, I skip all sugary drinks
  • If I want a sandwich, I go smaller or add veggies
  • If I go big on one item, I go super light on the rest

It’s all about balance—not perfection.  My Simple Comparison Guide below is how things go on in “my attic” (my mindset) now that I have a solution:

Not-So-Good-for-Me Choices Good-for-Me Choices
Fried chicken sandwich Grilled chicken sandwich
Any fries and soda Side salad and water
Double cheeseburger with extra sauce Single burger with veggies
Heavy combo meals Mix-and-match lighter items
Sugary drinks Water or Seltzer water
Regular Combos Smaller, balanced meals

This helps me stay on track without overthinking it.  Next, following Easy Tips That Make a Big Difference. If you would like to try this for yourself, here are some super-easy tips:

1. Mix and Match Your Meals. Don’t feel stuck ordering everything from one place. Think about what each spot does best.

2. Go Grilled. Grilled foods still taste great—but feel much lighter.

3. Watch the Extras: Try weaning yourself!  Dressings and sauces can sneak in extra calories. Keep them on the side.

4. Pick Smarter Sides. A salad or fruit can balance out your meal. Most importantly! Drink Smart. Water or unsweet tea helps you feel refreshed—not heavy. Sipping water throughout the day helps, too!

Why This Works So Well.  Since I started doing this, I noticed a big change in the way I feel: Every day I am physically feeling:

  • More energized
  • Less sluggish after eating
  • More in control of my choices
  • When visiting the doctor, always in the range of 2-5 pounds of my safe weight.  And the best part?

There are still visits to “the cows on the corners.”I still enjoy my favorite food spots differently! I don’t feel deprived like I am missing out. I just feel smarter about the approach and engage health and fun eating at the same time. It does not hurt to mix focus with food choice goals-snapping a MiND does just that!

Final Thoughts to Note: “A cow on every corner” may remind us of where it all started—but for me, it also reminds me of how a smart decision has changed the landscape. Fast food doesn’t have to be all or nothing. You can enjoy your favorite spots, mix things up, and create meals that taste good and help you feel good.  Start small. Try one mix-and-match meal this week. Get a free book to help you gain momentum. Journaling always helps, too.
